The government stole her uterus

Dear friends,

Uzbekistan's dictator is forcing doctors to cut out women's uteruses without their knowledge or consent to control birth rates. It’s a hideous and brutal attack on women by a US-backed dictator. Call on US Secretary of State Clinton, a champion for women's rights, to immediately cut off her support to the dictator. Click below to sign:
Uzbekistan's President is forcing doctors to cut out women's uteruses without their knowledge or consent to promote "birth control" across the country. It’s a vile and bloody crime against women being orchestrated by an odious dictator, and now is the time for it to end.

Uzbekistan's Karimov is one of the world’s worst dictators, he’s even boiled opposition activists alive. Yet he’s propped up by millions of dollars from the US government who pay him for military transport across the country. This latest round of brutality, this time against his country’s women, has turned the global spotlight on this monster. Let’s use this awful moment to persuade his biggest backer to ditch him.

US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton can cut him off. She has already publicly condemned Karimov for human rights abuses and this most recent assault on women's rights - a topic she champions - only ups the stakes.  Sign the petition below calling on Clinton to end Karimov's reign and stop the brutal attack on women:

https://secure.avaaz.org/en/uzbekistan_sterilisation_meme/?vl

Activists estimate tens or even hundreds of thousands of women were sterilised secretly when they went into the hospital for a routine procedure or to give birth -- waking up with no idea that their uterus has just been removed. One Uzbek gynecologist admitted, 'Every doctor is told...how many women are to be sterilised ... my quota is four women a month'. The use of arbitrary arrest and torture is so widespread that women don’t speak out for fear of reprisals, and foreign journalists and human rights activists are routinely thrown out of the country.

It doesn’t have to be like this -- the US could play hardball with Karimov, who relies on the steady flow of money from transit to Afghanistan to fund his lavish lifestyle. The human rights horror show in Uzbekistan has gone under the radar for years -- but we have a real chance to break the silence now, using the explosive BBC report that details forced sterilisations, and stand with the brave Uzbek women who have dared to tell their stories in the face of stunning oppression.

The human rights horror show in Uzbekistan has gone under the radar for years -- but we have a real chance to break the silence now, using the explosive BBC report, and stand with the brave Uzbek women who have dared to tell their stories in the face of stunning oppression.

Join the call for a first victory for the good guys in the war on women -- sign the petition to Clinton and forward to everyone:

https://secure.avaaz.org/en/uzbekistan_sterilisation_meme/?vl

Time and again, Avaaz members have stood up for the rights of women around the world. Let’s join together now and remind the US that opting for human rights or national interest is a false choice -- and that we’ll continue the fight for women's rights wherever they are threatened.

With hope and determination,

Help beat these Tories

I’m angry – in the last month the Tories’ budget has cut the taxes of millionaires while raising taxes on pensioners, and Tory MPs have nodded through their devastating Health Bill. As Ed Miliband said, we're seeing the Cameron project unravel and it’s taking ordinary people with it.

And I’m angry that the Tory Treasurer has been caught red-handed offering cosy private dinners in Downing Street with David Cameron in return for hundreds of thousands of pounds in Tory donations. It's money like that that allows the Tories to outspend us during this election campaign and try to distract from what they’re doing to the country. You know that’s wrong. Ed Miliband has put forward tough proposals to limit donations to £5,000.

But until that funding reform happens, I need your help.

David Cameron and George Osborne might be able to throw millions on adverts, but they can’t compete with Labour supporters each making a contribution. You can help show that we’re with ordinary people, even in tough times.

Please donate £50 to pay for leaflets for a whole local ward - or whatever you can afford

Be part of the community that is standing up against the Tories.

If you make a contribution of £50, I can guarantee that it will make a difference on the front line of this campaign.

Let’s send the Tories a message on 3rd May - that we are a party that stands with the public in tough times.

Donate now to help us win in May.

ACE Fundraising Appeal

SAVE ACE!

As at the end of March ACE's funds stood at approximately £1,100. This
may sound quite a lot, but in a normal month, without special
fundraising/ donations, ACE loses £250 - £350. Thus unless we raise more
funds, ACE could completely run out of money and be unable to pay the
rent etc, within 3-4 months.

We are confident this will not happen, and that ACE will survive and
indeed thrive. But this is only because we are confident that enough of
you will make donations and get involved in fundraising to save ACE.

You can now make a donation online at www.autonomous.org.uk

You can also now make a regular payment online - press the SUBSCRIBE
button. This is invaluable as it is regular income we can rely on.

You can also still make a traditional standing order - pick up a form in
ACE.

We need folk to help organise fundraising gigs, socials, stalls at
fleamarkets, carboots, do grant applications... and any other
fundraising ideas welcome. Do get in touch at ace@autonomous.org.uk or
in person at ACE at opening times.

Workers Beer - Get free music festival tickets and raise funds for ACE

Just received this from the Workers Beer Company - Though there is no
Glastonbury this year there is the good news that we can fundraise at
Victoria Park during the Olympics - 27th July to 12th August.

http://www.btlondonlive.com/victoria-park

SO - all wanting ACE to stay a valuable resource for the community
please email back to say if you can make any or all of the dates between
27th July to 12th August. Cheers.

The other festivals that we can bid for places for are listed here:

https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/88S7X32

Also please reply to ACE as soon as you can to say what events you can
attend (probably half of them will not be worth doing though as we will
have to pay for our own transport to get down south for most I think) -
We have until 20th April to get back to WBC with the number of
volunteers we have available and what festivals we want to attend.

18TH APRIL

St Imier Speaking Tour

Wednesday 18th April, 7:00pm
@ The Autonomous Centre of Edinburgh,
17 West Montgomery Place
Donations Welcome

In August 2012 anarchists from all over the world will be gathering in
St Imier, Switzerland for a week of events to mark the 140th anniversary
of the founding of the Anarchist International- a major split with the
authoritarian international of Karl Marx.

This split represents a fundamental divide between those who believe
that communism can be imposed from above, and those who believe that we
can only have true communism if we have freedom as well. How we get
where we want to go is as important as where we want to go.

As part of the process of building up to the summer event, the AF is
hosting a series of meetings around the country. The theme of the
meetings is the struggle against authoritarianism- from St Imier to
today. The following issues will be discussed:

• The background to St Imier and what was involved in the split
• How the struggle against authoritarianism continued in key revolutions
such as Russia and Spain
• The debate about human ‘nature’ and why humans do not need authority
to flourish
• The role of authoritarian tendencies in struggles today eg the cuts
movement, the strikes in the public sector, the student movement and
within the anarchist movement itself

Anti workfare activity

Meet at ACE 10am Thursday 19th April

Join us in visiting employers who are still profiting from slave labour
by their involvement in the Work Programme and other government workfare
schemes.

We will be talking to workers, management and shop customers, and
leafleting, to explain why the unemployed are not going to put up with
compulsory work-for-benefits. Workfare not only attacks claimants, but
undermines all workers' wages and conditions.

It will probably last for a couple of hours or so, but just come along
for however long you can manage.

systematic violence and environmental destruction, and the heroism of
those who confront it head-on.

Freeing Local Food from the Prison Economy

Picture the good old days when a network of family farms just outside a city provided food for nearby urban eaters—an early 20th-century reality that seems quaint from the perspective of someone navigating today's globalized agricultural system. While local food activists are working hard to rebuild that economic connection, a less savory relationship between cities and their rural surroundings has largely taken the place of an agricultural one in New York State—one with more to do with drug offenses than corn subsidies.

Mass incarceration—the population explosion of American prisons as a result of stricter sentencing associated with the war on drugs—has meant new prisons and jobs for many towns that until recently had more cows than people. That's created an often-tense relationship between rural areas and the urban centers that populate their prisons. Now, a social enterprise called Milk Not Jails is aiming to turn that tension into something much healthier.

"Locking people up is expensive. And in a time of New York’s budgetary crisis, we think it’s an obvious place to look for […] savings," says Brenden Beck, the co-founder, along with Lauren Melodia, of Milk Not Jails. Their idea is to refashion the urban-rural relationship into a “mutually supportive one, not a destructive one." The strategy? Boost the dairy economy of the Hudson Valley by connecting farmers with consumers in New York City. "We want New York's urban residents to support its rural residents by buying their milk, not going to their prisons," says Beck.

The organization will market and distribute milk, yogurt, butter and half & half from two Hudson Valley farms to CSAs, institutional housing (like senior centers and halfway houses), and daycare centers throughout New York City. The first farm to join is Ronnybrook out of Ancramdale, which will maintain its traditional packaging but show its support for Milk Not Jails by hanging a branded "necklace" around the necks of its glass bottles. Proceeds from selling the dairy line will pay a former prisoner to drive a truck, the purchase of which was made possible with Kickstarter funding.

The ultimate goal of the project is to secure enough allies from across the state to affect legislative change. Milk Not Jail's eight-point policy plan includes goals like "Legalize the sale of raw milk products" and "End racist marijuana arrests." Of course, the project has a long way to go before it gets to that point, but it represents a useful pivot in local food activism: using food to build awareness for causes outside the environment, too.

Burn Shell's cash. Not its oil

Hi friends

Great news. One of the world’s biggest ethical funds has removed Arctic drillers from its books. Now let’s get the rest to follow suit.

Last year we met with and then wrote to investment giant F&C in a bid to persuade them to ditch Arctic drillers Cairn Energy from their list of ethical investments.

Well, recently, they did just that. The Scotland Herald confirmed the good news, reporting that F&C "had adopted a general policy to screen out any oil firm drilling in the Arctic".

This is a big success. But hundreds of thousands of you have called for the Arctic to be off-limits to oil drillers (thank you), and together we can do more:
Tell the top fund providers who have any environmental screens in place on their funds to  drop Arctic drillers from their books.

Ethical and environmental funds rely on people with a conscience - people like you - to tell them where they should put their money. Your pressure can help persuade them to ditch Arctic drillers, draw a protective red line around the Arctic and tip the balance against companies like Shell.

But this is about more than just money. We need to establish a consensus among investors that drilling for oil in the Arctic is unacceptable. It is reckless. It is wrong.

As a recent Observer editorial said, the Arctic is “the most environmentally sensitive region on the planet” and it is “too precious to be left unprotected.”
Let’s get 20,000 messages to environmental fund providers, telling them to screen for Arctic drillers and drop them from their books. Right now.

Thank you,

I am not an activist

My name is Sergey and I'm an attorney in Russia. I'm straight - happily married for 16 years - and until last week I would not have been called an "activist".   But in just five days I will got to court, fined and maybe even thrown in jail because I held up a banner in Saint Petersburg and told the truth:
“A dear family friend is lesbian. My wife and I love and respect her … and her family is just as equal as ours."

I was among the first to be arrested, but thousands more could follow.  As I write this, Russian officials are fast tracking a plan to extend Saint Petersburg's "gay propaganda" law to the entire country.

I believe that it should never be illegal to defend the dignity of friends and family.  Will you sign and share my urgent letter to Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin asking him to denounce this law before my trial? He has the power to end this, but we have only a few days to build the massive outcry that will force him to pay attention:
www.allout.org/standwithsergey

Supporters of the law claim that it would "protect children," but my arrest makes clear the real intention.  This law is really about making lesbian, gay, bi and trans (LGBT) people disappear in Russia's second largest city. And not just LGBT people - the law will muzzle people like me, straight people who care about our LGBT friends and family. Now that lawmakers in the Duma (the federal legislature) are debating a version of the law, this despicable law could go national - unless we fight it now.

The world, and many of my fellow Russians, are starting to wake up to the idiocy of this law. From the Russian Human Rights Ombudsman, to the Presidential Human Rights Council, more figures are stepping up to tell Russia how this law is a flagrant violation of human rights. The law is being challenged in the courts, and it's losing popularity as it reminds people of a very ugly part of our history when people were silenced - or worse - for speaking their mind. The law also breaks just about every international human rights treaty obligation that our country is a party to.

That's why I'm appealing to the one person whose influence over the political process in Russia could help us annul this unconstitutional law in St. Petersburg, and make sure it isn't rolled out nationwide - Prime Minister Putin. Sign now, then share my letter to the prime minister with everyone you can - let's make sure he knows the whole world is watching:

BTCV: GreenZine

BTCV has been one of Britain's best kept secrets for more than half a century. But we're not hiding our light under a bushel any longer.

We aren't changing what we do but we are changing how we tell our stories to ensure everyone knows the extent of our great work across the UK and beyond. Next month you'll start to see some changes as we raise our game.
We hope you'll join us on this exciting journey and help spread the word. Don't miss next month's GreenZine for how you can join in and feel good.

Hop on Board - We Need Your Help

Across the UK our minibuses help us achieve great results by getting our volunteers out to the green places which need our help.

But our Central Lakes minibus has definitely seen better days.

It's now 13 years old and has clocked up 29,388 miles. It's taken 790 volunteers to 124 different Lakeland sites and carried the tools to help us plant 35,175 trees during its lifetime.

We need to buy another minibus to keep our teams active at the heart of this beautiful National Park. Please help by giving what you can. Donate online or read more about our work in Cumbria.

Palace Joy for BTCV Community Group

Last month we told you about our fantastic event at Buckingham Palace. Well it turned out to be even more fantastic for a community group from Haringey.

Living Under One Sun, a vibrant community group from Northumberland Park, manages allotments, play-schemes, an orchard, and an apiary and last year won our Community Group of the Year award at BTCV's Green Hero awards.

Since then Living Under One Sun has strengthened its relationship with BTCV and the group’s founder, neighbourhood officer Leyla Laksari, was invited to a BTCV reception at Buckingham Palace hosted by BTCV Patron HRH the Duke of Edinburgh.
A fellow guest was so impressed by Living Under One Sun’s achievements, he donated £5000.
BTCV supports more than 2000 community groups across the UK. Find out how you can get involved - you might even get a trip to the Palace!

In Kent we've already found a new way to tell the BTCV story - or should that be a poem!
A poetry book is to be launched to raise funds for BTCV.
The book, put together by a poetry collective, is called Touch Wood.
It will be launched in June and contains 60 poems written by young people aged between eight and 11 years old as part of the BTCV Kent Heritage Trees project.

The poems have been selected by Kent poet Vicky Wilson, part of the WordAid collective, and are accompanied by illustrations by the children. All profits from the sale of each book go to support BTCV.

Maundy Thursday

Easter always falls on the first Sunday after the first full moon after the Spring Equinox. Maundy Thursday is always the Thursday before the Easter weekend. In 2012 Maundy Thursday is on April 5th and in 2013 it falls on March 28th.
In Greece and Bulgaria, eggs are painted red on Maundy Thursday, the egg being symbolic of birth, rebirth and new beginnings, and the colour red representing the blood of Jesus.

According to legend is said that Mary Magdalene, who was the first to see Jesus risen from the dead, went around the world telling of the news. She arrived at the Emperor Tiberius’s palace in Rome, where according to tradition, everyone visiting must present a gift to the Emperor. Mary presented the Emperor with an egg and greeted him with the words “Christ has risen from the dead!” In disbelief, the Emperor said that this was as likely as the white egg in Mary’s hand turning red.

No sooner had he spoken the words when the egg started to change colour until it finally turned bright red. In Sweden, Maundy Thursday is called Skärtorsdagen and is related to old folklore as the day of the witches. Children dress up as witches and knock on doors receiving Easter eggs or money. The tradition predates Christian times coming from a pagan belief relating to the Spring Equinox, that on this day witches flew off on broomsticks to dance with the devil at Blåkulla.

A rather odd Slovakian tradition the Thursday of Easter week was to bring an anthill into the house complete with ants in the belief that it would bring yearlong happiness and an abundance of food. There was one important proviso, however, the anthill must not be carried over water or all efforts would be in vain.

The word “Maundy” comes from the Latin word mandatum, meaning “commandment,” referring to the commands Jesus is said to have given his disciples at the Last Supper – to love one another and remember his sacrifice. In many Christian churches the “Washing of the Feet” is a traditional part of the celebration, as Jesus is said to have washed the feet of his Apostles at the last supper. Many churches also carry out Maundy Thursday rites that include handing out special coins known as “Maundy money” to the poor and elderly.
