Take Back the Land! 12-18 July Douglas Valley action camp
Opencast coal mining in the Douglas Valley is about the ruling class destroying communities for their own financial gain. Its about ecological destruction on a massive scale for capitalism’s unquenchable thirst for cheap energy. Its about absentee fat-cat land-lords making millions off land that shouldn’t be theirs. Its about morally corrupt local (and national) government putting profit before people. Join us 12-18 July in the Douglas Valley, South Lanarkshire, to build on 20 years of community struggle and four years of direct action against the UK’s biggest opencast mining company. It’s time to Take Back the Land!

Discussing Radical Environmental Direct Action
By Coal Action Scotland,
Join us on Tuesday 15th May (7.30pm) for an evening of information sharing and discussion about radical environmental direct action in the Autonomous Centre Edinburgh. The evening will be in 3 parts:
Firstly, there will be a presentation from an editor of the US based Earth First! Journal entitled "No System but the Ecosystem!"
No System But The Ecosystem!
A History and Future of the International Earth First! Movement, from ecological resistance to revolutionary struggle. In this talk, an Earth First! agitator and editor of the movement's publication, Earth First! Journal, from the US, will briefly introduce the movement history and explore the possible future of Earth First!, and other radical ecological efforts, in contributing to the (re)emergence of a global resistance to state and capital. The presentation includes a slideshow of images from Earth First! actions and other ecological resistance efforts.
The second part of the evening will be a presentation by members of Coal Action Scotland on the history of opencast coal mining in the Douglas Valley, the resistance so far and the resistance to come.
Call for Action in South Lanakshire!
For 3 years Coal Action Scotland has been fighting against the social injustice and environmental devastation represented by over 20 years of continuous open cast coal mining in the Douglas Valley. Scottish Coal are in trouble. Profits are down 90%, diesel is costly and coal is relatively cheap. They need a new 4 million tonne mine at Glentaggart East or face collapse. Now is the time to act! Stop the total encirclement of a community by coal mines. Stop the rapid destruction of remaining intact habitats and green space. Come along to learn about the Douglas Valley, the communities we fight for and the industry and infrastructure we are against... And find out what you can do to help.
(see also http://www.indymediascotland.org/node/27202 )
Lastly there will be chance for discussion with tea and (vegan) cakes provided.

MORE ON THE PRISONERS
Alberto Patishtán Gómez was born on April 19, 1971 in the Chiapas municipality of El Bosque . He was arbitrarily deprived of his freedom on June 19, 2000 for crimes he did not commit. Two years later he was sentenced to 60 years in prison. When this injustice took place, Patishtán was very active in the political life of his community. He had been an outspoken critic of the corruption of politicians and political institutions. Despite the horrific prison conditions and his health problems, Alberto continues fighting from inside. Known as Professor Patishtán, Alberto was an elementary teacher at a local public school and during these past 12 years has continued to be an exemplary fighter for justice for his two children, other prisoners, and his compañeros from around the world. Adherent to The Other Campaign since the release of Sixth Declaration of the Lacandon Jungle, his dignified example teaches us that the rebel spirit cannot be contained.
Similarly, since December 2011, our compañero Fancisco Sántiz López, member of the Zapatista Support Base communities since 1992, has been unjustly incarcerated and falsely charged with having lead a confrontation, which occurred in the Banavil community of the Tenejapa municipality of Chiapas, in which a member of the PRI party died. The racist and political character of this incident is obvious. As the Zapatista Good Government Council of Oventic explains, “The fabrication of crimes against our compañero comes from Los Pinos [the Mexican presidency], with the end of destroying the resistance of the zapatista communities; they are trying to impede at any cost the construction of the autonomy of indigenous peoples, it is part of a strategy of low-intensity warfare against our communities in resistance.”
Recently, on March 22 of this year, our compañero Francisco, as he was about to be released, was hit with another accusation of another false crime. For this reason, he remains at the moment a political prisoner, despite the fact that witnesses have corroborated the fact that Francisco Sántiz López was not at the site of the confrontation. Additionally, the Fray Bartolomé de Las Casas Human Rights Center has published a report indicating the names of those responsible for the murder. Obviously, the truth, much less justice, means little to the authorities.
Now is the time to continue increasing the pressure and rebel against so many injustices. We ask that we all join forces, once and for all, to demand that the bad powers of Mexico , particularly the repressors Pres. Felipe Calderón and Gov. Juan Sabines, immediately release our compañeros Alberto Patishtán Gómez and Francisco Sántiz López.

MORE ON THE FILM THE UPRISING OF DIGNITY
On the first of January 1994 thousands of indigenous men and women occupied seven cities in the southern Mexican state Chiapas . The Zapatistas occupied areas owned by large landowners, divided the land between thousands of families and have been building autonomous civil structures ever since.
The Zapatista Army of National Liberation (EZLN) rebellion was for land rights, health, education, freedom, democracy, peace and justice. The Zapatista movement does not seek to take control of the state. Instead the organisation demanded a profound democratisation of the whole country and a rejection of neoliberal economic policy. The local and national political leaders are still reacting with miltary force, repression and disinformation campaigns.
The EZLN sees its rebellion in a global context, and in 2005 launched “The Other Campaign”, the objectives being a new constitution for Mexico and the strengthening of the global resistance to capitalism. In a long term mobilization, independent organizations are to build an extra-parliamentary alliance in order to create a new left and anti-capitalist alternative.
The documentary provides insights into the self-administering structures in the areas of health, education, agriculture and collective work, as well as an explanation of the Zapatista politics. Thirdly, the difficulties are discussed – both within the movement as well as in relation to the government. Contributions are made from scientists, human rights activists and journalists and particularly from women and men from the roots of the Zapatista movement.
